"Fight for You" was written by Jason Derülo, Stevie Hoang, David F. Paich and Jeffrey T. Porcaro.[3] Production for the song was handled by RedOne, BeatGeek and Geo Slam.[3] It was recorded at Serenity West Recording Studio and Jim Henson Studios in Los Angeles, California, and mixed by Trevor Muzzy at Nomad Studios in Tetquan, Morocco.[3] Derülo said in an interview with Daily Star that "Fight for You" was the first song he and RedOne worked together on, stating "I'm glad it turned out so dope."[4] On working with RedOne, he said, "RedOne was a nice, humble, down-to-earth, special person."[4] In an interview with New! magazine, Derülo stated that the song "is based on a personal experience, I was in a relationship and I put myself in that place again where you would do anything to keep the relationship together so I went back to that place."[5]
"Fight for You" is an R&B song that incorporates an interpolation of "Africa" by Toto, and features lyrics that contain declarations of love.[6]
Shawn Kitchener of EntertainmentWise wrote that the album was "another relentless tirade of club-ready urban tunes that blend in to each-other far too often", referring to "Fight for You".[1] Kitchener wrote that the song was "the kind of sweet-as-candy R&B fodder that would fit in seamlessly on the High School Musical soundtrack."[1] Lewis Corner of Digital Spy noted "Fight for You" samples Toto's "Africa", writing that, "the end result is much like the continent's native lion; big, showy and extremely lazy – but its roar is loud enough to ensure it remains popular with the public."[7] whereas Robert Copsey also from Digital Spy referred to it as an "Earth-trouncing power anthem".[8]
In the United States, after the release of Future History, "Fight for You" debuted at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the chart issue dated October 15, 2011.[9] It also debuted at number 117 on the UK Singles Chart on October 22, 2011.[10] It has so far peaked at number 15.[11] In Ireland, "Fight for You" debuted at number 31 on the Irish Singles Chart on December 1, 2011.[12] The following week, the song peaked at number 28.[13]
The music video for "Fight for You" premiered online on November 25, 2011.[14] The video shows Derülo either singing solo with city skyline behind him, or spending time with his love interest in a subway train, shopping center, at home or under the shower.
